we’re all grown up now. when did that happen? esti and i go way back to those carefree teenage summers. back when your biggest worry was getting bored or not knowing what to wear. fast forward a decade or two and she books a maternity session with me. of course, i have a million little stories of way back when, so doing this session was definitely a fun time full of ridiculous memories (like when she made me sleep in a room full of china dolls and marilyn manson posters staring at me) and it was obviously a thrill to spend some time together after all these years. we got lost in the tall grass, abandoned castle, and ended up hanging out until way past sunset, joking at each other’s flaws, and catching up on life. so it seems that maybe we haven’t grown up so much after all.
only the sun fell at the skatepark that day. it gave way to the beautiful “golden hour” making everything around us look magnificent. leire and kevin were, admittedly, nervously waiting for their maternity session to start. we thought the skatepark would be a perfect setting to show off their fun nature and rebellious spirit. not sure kids waiting to have a turn were quite on board, but that’s another story! haha. we had fun doing some jumps and dramatic posing, and just so you know, that’s a photoshop composite. in case you were wondering, no, I won’t actually let someone jump over a pregnant woman on my watch. it was a quick session for sure, but I loved the lighting, the vibe, and just being able to capture these moments of genuine nervousness and excitement. when we were done all that was left to do was enjoy the sunset, and wait…
we skipped town. we packed the props, the cameras, even the kid, and we went to spend a photo-filled day in cantabria. oihane was so easy going in front of the camera. so clearly in love with her husband, unai, and him with her. their little trouble-maker, ekaitz and i got into tons of improvised games, and we even got time to race, jump, swing, and even end up completely soaked. but i have to say that my favorite part of this photo shoot was the gorgeous sunset at the end, the genuine smiles, and the excitement on their faces when they talk about finally meeting baby urko. i think my heart even skipped a beat!
they laughed and they cried. no, seriously… there was so much laughter going on during geany’s maternity session that i think we all had a tear in the corner of our eye from laughing so much. we decided to meet in portugalete, right by the suspension bridge “puente de bizkaia” and start creating images there. the excitement was in the air and this couple was so fun to work with. they were up to anything i said and took it all in stride. i think what i love the most about this session is the emotion in it. it is all so happy and carefree and fun. i just want to congratulate them and wish them the very best as they transition into parenthood. i’m sure there will be many more laughs than tears.
we hit the road. when i first started talking to tani about doing a maternity session we quickly got excited about the idea of finding someplace out of town, calm, and absolutely beautiful. we found the perfect spot in noja. a nearly-deserted beach, an adjacent park, and the golden hour promising us a gorgeous sunset was definitely worth the drive. these two… they’ve definitely got a good thing going on. it was so easy to get them to be affectionate and have fun with the session because they are just overflowing with love for each other. they honestly made my job so easy and fun that i can’t wait until we get together again for some newborn photos. it’s going to be amazing!
in retrospect, maybe we should have brought a map. marcos, his wife juli and i had arranged to meet up and do a fun maternity photo shoot in a specific side of the beach in sopelana. as we got in the car and started heading that way we realised… we weren’t sure which way to go. somewhere in the excitement of planning this day we had all lost track of where we were going. literally. we knew exactly where we were going but no idea how to get there. after an emergency call to my friend “who knows every beach” and many wrong turns, we decided to give up and walk around the surrounding woods, hoping to at least be able to get a few good shots in before the sun went down. oh, and the sun. the sun was sitting perfectly in between the trees, it was definitely shining down on us. it is worth mentioning that as i laid down my backpack and jacket against a tree while i took photos of these two, a nearby dog decided to mark it’s territory… on my stuff. so that was fun! haha. after a while venturing in the woods (big points to juli for venturing while 8 months pregnant!) we were eventually able to find the spot we’d been looking for. the sunset was there to welcome us and we were happy to take advantage of it and take it from there. all in all, the photos turned out great and i think that it was well worth getting lost and having to toss my jacket in the laundry! 😉
congratulations marcos and juli, i can’t wait to meet him! 🙂
