bea & arkaitz::: wedding! (sondika, spain)

2014-09-06_0037

we hoped for a sunny day. we got a sunny day. in fact, it could be said that it was too sunny. bea and arkaitz would say their i do’s during a beautiful outdoor ceremony. two of the most active people that i know, their friends and family watched and smiled as they promised to love, serve, and respect each other eternally. my favourite part of the ceremony was definitely when their beautiful dog, tom, walked excitedly down the aisle as the ring bearer. the fact that tom was wearing a hot pink bow tie was the cherry on top of a fantastic and fun ceremony. i had a really great time capturing moments for these two and their ridiculously fun group of friends and family. i didn’t want to leave! but now that its all said and done i guess all thats left to say is congratulations!!

hannah & will::: wedding (geilenkirchen, germany)

2014-08-20_0021

shhhhhh!! don’t tell anyone, but these two got married in the smallest and most secretive wedding that i’ve ever been a part of. hanna & will tied the knot in front of the smallest group of friends and family. i believe less than 20 people. i have to say there is something to be said about such a small and intimate wedding, i really liked it. everyone there being truly happy to be their. nobody is there out of a social obligation or to get free drinks all night. and i got to capture it all and help them keep the secret. i know, i know, you’re all thinking “but how are you join to keep it a secret if you post it online for the world to see?!” and my answer to that is… they said i could, so that’s all i need to know! ha!

hannah and will have such an amazing vibe to them. they met online… i just want to throw that out there for the skeptics to read. she is in the air force and he is a contractor in a war zone. my favourite part of their story is that due to their jobs one of the things that really made them perfect for each other is that due to their particular job situations, they get each other. most people wouldn’t. and that, my lovelies, is love.

another thing that was really special and fun about this wedding was that the reception consisted of homemade delicious  chill and the most amazing cupcakes i have ever tasted. i believe they had baileys irish cream in the filling. to. die. for.

hannah & will, thank you so much for letting me be there for you guys. it was truly an honour and a fantastic time, definitely worth the trip to germany! i wish you all the best, and congratulations!

cristina::: anytime!

2014-08-05_0001

how can you make justice to such a huge personality in just 2 dimensions? that was my challenge when i set out to take cristina’s portraits. this girl does it all, from martial arts, to being a camp leader, to actually clowning around… as a legitimately trained clown. after talking for a bit we quickly hit it off by realising that neither of us takes life too seriously, and that is just a recipe for a fantastic photo shoot. tell me you’re up to anything, beautiful music to my ears.

so armed with nothing but my two 35mm digital camera’s we set out to have a fun time and come up with ridiculous poses, and a genuine “yes, i actually look this awesome all the time” photo. this, and laughing until our faces hurt, was what came out of it!

emily::: anytime

2014-05-25_0005

it was the end of an era. the closing of a chapter. a few weeks prior to this photo shoot emily sent me a quick message on facebook telling me that she was moving. after several years living as a “guiri” in bilbao, she was moving back to her beloved chicago. immediately i felt a rush of nostalgia, thinking of how much more we should have hung out, and we didn’t. there is definitely something about something being taken away that drives us to want to hold on to it just a little bit longer. as we were talking about meeting up for lunch or coffee, as a form of goodbye, it suddenly occurred to me that this was a time to celebrate her future and yet commemorate her past. to be happy for the opportunities to come in windy chicago and to honor her experiences in rainy bilbao. in this friendship spontaneity has always been king. as soon as i suggested the idea she jumped on board. and on came a session full of hysterical laughter, more chit-chat than photos snapped, and strolling an umbrella on a sunny day. we grabbed a quick lunch afterward and resolved that though short-lived, this had been a fantastic time together and we should try to hang out when i visit the US.

after all, if you find someone who can just as easily make you laugh in a restaurant by stick a french fry up her nose as have a serious conversation about the future. someone who shows up to a photo shoot in purple pants because “jeans are too obvious”, and whose physical response to “stand there, however feels natural” and “natural” to her translates to the captain morgan pose… then this is definitely someone worth holding  on to. 🙂

best of luck in chicago emily, you’re definitely missed!

marcos & juli::: maternity

2014-05-26_0006

in retrospect, maybe we should have brought a map. marcos, his wife juli and i had arranged to meet up and do a fun maternity photo shoot in a specific side of the beach in sopelana. as we got in the car and started heading that way we realised… we weren’t sure which way to go. somewhere in the excitement of planning this day we had all lost track of where we were going. literally. we knew exactly where we were going but no idea how to get there. after an emergency call to my friend “who knows every beach” and many wrong turns, we decided to give up and walk around the surrounding woods, hoping to at least be able to get a few good shots in before the sun went down. oh, and the sun. the sun was sitting perfectly in between the trees, it was definitely shining down on us. it is worth mentioning that as i laid down my backpack and jacket against a tree while i took photos of these two, a nearby dog decided to mark it’s territory… on my stuff. so that was fun! haha. after a while venturing in the woods (big points to juli for venturing while 8 months pregnant!) we were eventually able to find the spot we’d been looking for. the sunset was there to welcome us and we were happy to take advantage of it and take it from there. all in all, the photos turned out great and i think that it was well worth getting lost and having to toss my jacket in the laundry! 😉

congratulations marcos and juli, i can’t wait to meet him! 🙂

Sebastian Joseph!

2014-04-11_0003

Sebastian Joseph was born a few weeks ago to proud Phil and Lucy. I was almost as excited to take his photograph as I was to see these two as parents for the first time. It was a nice relaxed time getting to know the little one. He quietly slept for most of the session and didn’t seem bothered at all by all the attention. Grandma was visiting to help out with the new arrival so we took the chance and snapped a few photos of the two already loving one another. These just melt my heart.

adrian, izan, and helen::: family

2014-05-06_0013

 I would have had the same look on my face if someone had asked me to start breakdancing, with no music, in the middle of a park. It took him a minute to get started but once he did Adrian rocked it. It was so cute to see his family cheering him on and telling him what moves to try next. Once he was done we took a little walk and decided to do some individual shots, so everyone had a fun photo or two to remember the day by. It was a fun time just hanging out with these guys for a bit. And I have to admit that if I wasn’t so accident prone I would have asked him to teach me a move or two!
